About

A NEW LIFE FOR QUALITY WOOD

Philosophy

The name Rough Wood stands for our committed approach to woodwork. We use unrefined material that has been discarded, capture its essence and put it back to use through solid, elegant and timeless furniture. This upcycling involves giving a new lease of life to wonky wood, sometimes pierced with rusted nail holes, sometimes stained with old paint or oil marks. At Rough Wood we believe that recycling is important, but so is telling an honest story about how waste can be redeemed and made productive once again.

Ecological commitment

We source our wood from demolition works across London. It comes from old wood roof joists,  scaffold boards, old pallets that would otherwise end up in the skip yard and be reduced to trivial chipboards. We fit our Rough Wood products with steel legs welded in our workshop, which can be left unpainted and rough, or painted on request to one’s own preferences. For both wood and metal, we only use solvent free coatings and paints that are eco friendly.

OUR HISTORY

Story

We have a carpentry experience spanning two decades which has started in Transylvania, in North-West Romania, home to about 65% of the EU’s virgin forests. We have had the fortune to carve the finest wood Europe has on offer, from oak, to spruce, to beech. At the same time, being involved in the trade for so long has enabled us to witness first hand the ecological catastrophe brought about by illegal logging. At Rough Wood we decided to take a stand against such predatory practices and much of our vision stems from the desire to offer a more sustainable alternative to this large-scale devastation.

Workshop

Located in East London, Rough Wood is based in a small and cosy workshop where most of our work towards creating beautiful furniture objects takes place.
